How it works. Fiesta Turf Weed Killer is a selective, broadleaf weed killer that leaves turf healthy and weed-free using a specially formulated iron chelate solution that also controls moss and algae. Because broadleaf weeds (dicots) absorb more iron than grasses (monocots), Fiesta has a selectivity mechanism that kills weeds but not grass, and makes it suitable for spot or broadcast application. Fiesta* works quickly, delivering visible same-day results even in cool weather, and has no unpleasant odor during or after application. Fiesta is quickly absorbed by the leaf tissue and transported down to the root. The sprayed leaves then turn black or brown. People and pets can re-enter the treated area once the spray is dry. Active ingredient is iron. The active ingredient in Fiesta is iron—present as FeHEDTA. At a cellular level, the iron in Fiesta is bound to a chelating agent, hydroxyethylenediaminetriacetic (HEDTA), which stabilizes the iron, making it more available for plant uptake while eliminating the typical concrete/pavement staining issues associated with many iron products.

FeHEDTA functions as a catalyst for oxygen reduction, which causes the production of unstable and highly reactive oxygen radicals, such as hydroxyl radicals, which in turn cause cellular damage within the weed—leading to plant death.

HEDTA and the closely related chemical ethylenediaminetriacetic (EDTA) are found in many everyday materials: water conditioners, soaps and detergents, fertilizers, cosmetics, and even as a preservative in food and drinks.

Fiesta’s consumer-friendly benefits stand out to lawn care operators and homeowners:

  • People and pets can re-enter area after spray dries
  • Sustainable alternative to conventional products
  • New 2012 label** with lower rates
  • New, smaller one-gallon container size
  • Kills weeds, not lawns
  • Works quickly (24-48 hours) – even in cool weather (as low as 50 degrees F)
