Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power has entered the EFI market with its Vanguard 810cc EFI engine series. The series combines the increased fuel efficiency of a closed-loop electronic fuel injection (EFI) system with the increased capability of an 810cc engine.

A big focus for the company in developing the engine was being certain they had the training tools to help dealers and their technicians have a firm grasp on diagnostics. The customer education department was involved throughout the development of the new engine, and had direct access to engineers who helped build training props designed to remove the fear for those dealers new to EFI engines and diagnostics.

Briggs is offering free Computer-Based Electronic Technician Assistant (ETA) diagnostic software, as well as a Tiny Scan Code Reader and EFI diagnostic cable at cost. The intention is for the diagnostic tools to be easily accessible, not areas of profit for the manufacturer.

ETA Software and Cable. The ETA Software requires a laptop computer or PA and the EFI diagnostic cable (retailing for $125). One of the best and most useful features of the software is its calibration update ability. Whenever the engine is plugged in, the software automatically looks for the most recent calibration data for that specific engine.

Tiny Scan Code Reader. The Tiny Scan Code Reader (retailing for $75) is the first tool of its kind to enter the market, Briggs & Stratton says. It will be especially helpful for dealers offering mobile service to contractors. With the tool they can easily drive out to a contractor’s jobsite and troubleshoot any issues.

Training

Briggs & Stratton will host several training opportunities at their Auburn, AL, location and at GIE+EXPO. They have already hosted some dealers for training, and are planning to hold livestream training and add those video recordings to their website for easy access and reference.

Tom Billigen, customer education training manager for Briggs & Stratton, had this to say about their approach to EFI diagnostics training: “We are trying to make it as easy to digest as possible so we can get everyone on the same level with these engines.”
