The city of Vail in Colorado is working to conserve water by cutting back on its use of turf grass at parks and commercial developments.

According to Vail Daily, Vail has launched a program to reduce the use of non-functional turf grass, or grass not used on playing fields and golf courses. The news story says the program started in 2019 at a local park, where 25% of turf grass was replaced with less water-intensive plants, which has saved 100,000 gallons of water annually.

This year, the project is expanding to another city park, where 11,800 square feet of turf grass will be removed. This is expected to save 176,000 gallons of water a year.

City leaders say they want to lead by example with alternative landscaping techniques.

Future plans include turf grass reduction at eight sites, encompassing more than 75,000 square feet of the grass.
