Michelin X Tweel Turf Tire on John Deere ZTrak

Ralph Dimenna, vice president of Michelin Tweel Technologies introduced the tire manufacturer’s first tire for the turf market on October 22 at GIE+EXPO 2014 in Louisville. The new X Tweel Turf tire reportedly has the same advantages of a pneumatic tire but won’t go flat.

The new tire will be exclusively found on John Deere ZTrak B, M, and R series mowers starting in 2015 with limited availability. Michelin and John Deere worked together over a seven year period to design a tire that met their standards for performance.

Available on the 54-, 60- and 72-inch deck sizes, the Michelin X Tweel Turf is said to be maintenance-free and eliminate downtime. The airless radial tire uses automotive rubber technology to achieve a tread that lasts up to three times longer than standard turf tires, according to John Deere.

High-strength, poly-resin spokes carry the load and absorb impacts while providing reduced machine bounce, resulting in improved operator comfort. The proprietary Comp10 Cable technology allows the load to hang from the top, resulting in low-contact pressure that mimics air-filled tires. The tire design also resists damage and is optimized for hillside stability.

At a price point of $749 for the two tires, John Deere calculates the cost of the tires to be less than a dollar a day over a two year period. Visit johndeere.com/tweel to calculate the cost of pneumatic tire downtime and learn how a Tweel tire could lead to time and cost savings.

At the show John Deere also introduced the new Z997R Diesel ZTrak. The Z997R features a 37.4-hp Final Tier 4 diesel engine. The Z997R is available with a 60- or 72-inch 7-Iron PRO side-discharge deck, 60-inch 7-Iron PRO Mulch On Demand deck, or a 60-inch 7-gauge fabricated rear discharge deck.
