“When we became homeowners ourselves, I became more conscientious and said, ‘There has to be a better way,’” Popp said. “We have a dog and a child that play on the grass.”

In 2014, Popp cut the chemicals and switched his Fairport-based business—Carbon Cutters—to only organic and chemical-free treatments that are safe for children and pets. Within two years, he had enough customers to run the business full-time.

“This season was a huge growth,” said Popp, who holds a degree in fisheries and wildlife science from Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks. “I see people becoming more conscientious about what’s going on their lawns. A lot of my customers’ biggest concerns are the health of their kids and pets.”
