Practical knowledge is one of the hallmarks of agriculture education at Jefferson County High School in Dandridge, Tennessee, and it is the most evident in the landscape and turf management class.

Students had T-squares and paper out last week, tracing the beginning of what will be their own design under the direction of teacher Jim Satterfield.

While a few of the students may go on to become landscape professionals—some even earning a two-year or four-year degree—most will acquire basic knowledge that will come in handy when renovating their own yards someday.

“If they can follow the instructions that I give them … they can sit down and draw out anything they can imagine,” Satterfield said.
