Garrett Hardware was founded in 1889 and is one of the oldest businesses in Healdsburg, California. The current owners have become a part of its storied history, and a recent remodel and a prestigious award have shown the store to be as much a part of the fabric of Healdsburg as ever.
Owner Carole Mascherini says she was heading up dual enterprises—a beauty salon and a construction company with her sons—when the previous owners approached her about buying the store.
“I did their hair and, interestingly enough, they said, ‘You know, Carole, we see you in the store all the time. If you want to buy the store when we’re ready to retire, let us know,’” Mascherini said. “Six months later they said, ‘Do you want to buy the store?’ So, I actually listened to that and that was in 1990.”
When Mascherini and her sons bought the property, the property line ended on the north edge of the main building, and since then, they bought up neighboring properties to now include the home furnishing store The Gift Horse and the lumber area, among other things.
