National Landscaping Competition Draws Hundreds

The National Association of Landscape Professionals held a competition for college students to test lawn-and-garden know-how.

Landscaping can be cutthroat. From March 14 through 17, Alamance Community College hosted the 2018 National Collegiate Landscape Competition, sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals.

For the nearly 800 students competing, Friday was competition day—and it was intense.

Landscape Plant Installation, one of the final challenges of the day, gave students a 15- by 15-foot plot, plants and a landscaping plan—which they reviewed the night before—and an hour and 15 minutes to put it all together.

Colleges and universities from across the country flew flags above their plots, chanting, blowing horns and cheering on their fellow students, who worked tirelessly rolling sod, digging and planting.
