Nashville, Tennessee startup GreenPal recently arrived in San Diego, California, to help locals find, schedule and pay for lawn care with just a few taps on their smartphones.

The company, started in 2012, makes a web and mobile app that homeowners can use to instantly solicit bids from vetted professions for next-day service. Available in 22 U.S. markets, GreenPal put down roots in San Diego after receiving a number of inquiries from interested clients in the area. There’s also the city’s climate, which supports year-round care.

Like Uber or Airbnb, the company is technically just a matching service, connecting homeowners to third-party providers and taking a 5 percent cut of proceeds in the process. GreenPal also touts itself as an operating system for lawn care pros, meaning they can use the service to get work, manage jobs and handle payments.

A litany of apps have sprung up over the past few years to help consumers outsource all of their chores—grocery shopping, housecleaning, hair and makeup, even gas tank fillups—to strangers. And as is usually the case with these kinds of on-demand services, GreenPal isn’t the only game in town.
