Lighting and hardscape manufacturers highlight how contractors can stay ahead of the latest trends and techniques.

Education

Continually attending educational seminars and events is one way to stay abreast of the latest trends.

"Attending trade shows like CEDIA and participating in manufacturer-led training events ensures contractors stay informed on the latest technologies and techniques," says Ryan Williams, director of product marketing for FX Luminaire.

Robert Bowers, P. Eng. vice president of engineering, hardscapes, at the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, notes that because the lighting industry features a low barrier to entry, knowledgeable contractors may be competing against untrained contractors.

"We spend a lot of time providing education, technical resources and training resources in the proper installation methods for standard pavers, permeable pavers and segmental retaining walls in residential markets and commercial markets," Bowers says.

Understand color temperature (for lighting)

While some may tend to light every item at one color temperature, Todd Goers, director of sales at WAC Lighting, says seasoned professionals know how to light up various objects with different color temperatures.

"There are guys and gals that are doing this successfully with the different colors of the white light. They know what colors look good," Goers says. "If it's a blue spruce, they know that a higher Kelvin temperature is going to make that look even better than if it were installed at like 2700 Kelvin. It's going to look better if it's at 4000 Kelvin. The longer they've done it, the more successful they are working the colors into the landscape to create a beautiful scene."

Invest in reliable tools

As lighting systems become more involved, lighting pros will need to make sure they have the right tools in their tool boxes.

Testing and programming tools that support advanced systems like RGBW and automation are essential for smooth installations," Williams says.

Build strong relationships

All in all, lighting pros should not be afraid to rely on others within the industry, such as manufacturers and other peers.

"Companies like FX Luminaire offer invaluable resources, including technical support, product updates and hands-on demonstrations," Williams says. "Networking with peers through professional organizations helps contractors share knowledge and stay ahead of emerging trends."
