It’s been a long winter, but now is the time to start planning your spring and summer landscaping projects. Here are five trends in custom landscaping from Jeff and Ryan Patera, owners of Patera Landscaping in Yutan, Nebraska.

1. Outdoor Living Spaces

More and more homeowners are expanding their living space outdoors. Patios for entertaining, relaxing and dining are hugely popular, says Jeff Patera. Customers of Patera Landscaping are choosing backyard dreamscapes that incorporate everything from outdoor kitchens, fire pits and fireplaces to perennial gardens and waterfalls with ponds. The trend is all about maximizing living space while enhancing a family's enjoyment of the outdoors at home.

2. Curb Appeal

A properly designed front-yard landscape creates curb appeal for years, Patera says. “A clean, beautiful front landscape is every homeowner's dream. This is a very easy thing to achieve with proper planning and execution.” Do-it-yourself landscapers, however, can get in over their heads. "We specialize in soil, boulder and plant installation," Patera says. "That’s how the homeowner is sure to get the maximum wow factor.”

3. Privacy

Landscaping is an easy way to create privacy, allowing homeowners to enjoy their space alone. Trees and larger shrubs can create a screen from neighbors. “Just because you desire not to see your neighbor doesn’t mean it cannot be beautiful,” Patera says. “We create landscape beds that block neighbors and provide a beautiful backdrop to the property as well.” Plants and trees that are appropriate for the space don’t overgrow and become a problem in the future, he says.
