As reported by Cleveland.com, officers in Richmond Heights, OH, responded to a wooded area where a landscaping company was dumping leaves. The crew foreman told the officer he was instructed by his employer to dump the leaves there because the company was cleared to do so by the city’s service director. The service director said that wasn’t the case, adding that the landscaping company was actually instructed to pile the leaves on the curb for pickup. The landscaper apologized and agreed to remove the leaves.
Seems odd. Piling leaves at the edge of a property is the easiest way for a landscape company to dispose of them; at least much easier than loading them in a truck and hauling them to a dumping ground. Perhaps these woods were right next to the property being cleared. Even so, it would still have been easier to dump then at the side of the road for city pickup. In any event, it’s a good reminder to clearly identify expectations and get things in writing, especially when dealing with city workers and other government officials.
