The US Composting Council (USCC) launched a new national benchmark survey focused on how landscape architects, developers, designers, and related professionals are currently using or evaluating the use of compost in site development, landscape performance, soil improvement, erosion control, and stormwater management.

The Compost Use in Landscape & Development Projects Benchmark Survey is designed to better understand current industry practices, perceived barriers, and the tools professionals need to more confidently specify compost in project applications.

As projects increasingly face pressure to improve site performance, manage stormwater, and address challenging soil conditions, compost can play a practical role in applications such as soil amendment, compost-enriched topsoil, erosion control, bioswales, rain gardens, and green roof systems. However, specification practices, cost perceptions, and confidence in application vary widely across the industry.

“This benchmark study gives us an opportunity to hear directly from the professionals shaping landscape and development projects,” says Linda Norris-Waldt, Executive Director of USCC. “The findings will help inform practical resources, specifications, and educational tools that support stronger project outcomes and broader adoption where compost makes sense.”

The benchmark explores:

  • Where compost is currently being used in landscape and development projects
  • Perceived benefits and performance expectations
  • Confidence in specifying compost for various applications
  • Concerns related to cost, availability, contractor readiness, and specifications
  • What would make professionals more likely to increase compost use

The benchmark takes approximately 3 minutes to complete.
