Phillips & Temro Industries says its Idle Free heat system for work trucks has the ability to provide power and meet all engine-off requirements while keeping the engine and driver warm.

How it works. An Engine Start Module (ESM) starts the truck which allows the truck battery type to change from starter batteries to deep-cycle batteries. These batteries then perform all truck DC power needs without the truck idling. The climate control functions for the cab are used in the same manner as if the truck were running. When the heat system is on, power is supplied from the truck’s battery to all necessary circuits to run climate control.

Benefits. This Idle Free system can provide up to eight hours of interior cab and engine heat. It also operates communication equipment and interior and exterior lights. Other benefits include:

  • Engine regeneration intervals are increased
  • Fuel savings due to reduced idling
  • Reduced CO2 emissions due to reducing idling
  • Easy installation takes just a few hours, manufacturer assures
  • No additional weight added to truck
  • Simple to operate with just the flip of a switch installed in the cab

System components. The Idle Free system consists of seven key components:

  1. Engine Start Module (ESM)
  2. Coolant heater
  3. Coolant heater installation parts
  4. Truck-specific coolant heater mounting bracket
  5. Truck-specific harness
  6. Alternator cable
  7. On/off toggle switch
