Winter is demanding, and your compact track loader or skid-steer loader is built to tackle tough conditions. But even the most rugged machines need care to perform their best. Mid-season maintenance is your chance to prevent breakdowns, maximize uptime, and finish the season strong.
Here are essential checks every snow removal professional should make:
Inspect Equipment and Attachments
Start with a thorough inspection of your loader and attachments. Addressing small issues now prevents costly downtime later.
- Check hydraulic couplers and electrical connections.
- Ensure hoses are free of leaks.
- Look for wear on attachment cutting edges.
Fluids & Lubrication
Cold temperatures thicken standard oil, reducing circulation and stressing components. Use winter-grade oils and low-temperature greases to keep machines running smoothly.
- Verify hydraulic fluid levels.
- Follow your operator and maintenance manual for climate-specific recommendations.
Fuel & Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Management
- When temperatures drop below -11° C, DEF can freeze. Use winter-blend diesel and anti-gel additives to prevent fuel system issues.
- For Tier 4 engines, monitor DEF. Most machines tolerate short-term freezing, but prolonged issues can trigger fault codes or engine derates.
- Always follow the operation and maintenance guidelines.
Engine Loading & Regeneration
Light-duty cycles and idling don’t generate enough heat for proper exhaust regeneration. In extreme cold, schedule heavier workloads to maintain performance and avoid DPF-related fault codes.
Reduced idle time also helps keep the cab warm.
Tracks, Tires & Batteries
- For compact track loaders, clear ice buildup from the undercarriage and check track tension.
- For skid-steer loaders, inspect tire pressure and tread for traction.
- Cold weather drains batteries — test charge levels, clean terminals and confirm block heaters are working.
Preparation is as important as equipment. A few proactive steps such as proper fluids, attachment checks, fuel treatment and system inspections will keep your loaders pushing through winter without costly delays.
Investing in maintenance ensures your team stays productive and your customers satisfied all season long.
