Los Angeles-based Turf Terminators is capitalizing on the water crisis in California. The company installs California-friendly, drought-tolerant landscapes in exchange for consumers’ state-offered water rebates. As a result, Turf Terminators’ website states, customers enjoy a new drought-resistant landscape, save money on their water bills, conserve water, and contribute to a solution for California’s water crisis.

And Turf Terminators’ business grows, and grows and grows. The company has gone from just a handful of employees to somewhere in the 200-500 range, according to the company’s LinkedIn profile.

How it works. According to Turf Terminators’ website, here’s how their business model works:

  • Turf Terminators has consulted regional, municipal and local water authorities, including utilities and state agencies, to understand the various turf removal rebate programs offered in Southern California. (As part of a statewide effort to conserve water, numerous municipalities and water utilities offer water rebates to customers who replace turfgrass with designated mulch, plants, rocks, shrubs and other ground cover that require little to no water to maintain.)
  • Turf Terminators utilizes water rebates from state water authorities that are offered per square foot of turf that is removed and replaced.
  • Customers assign their rights to state-offered water rebates over to Turf Terminators.
  • Turf Terminators’ contractors transform customers’ lawns and campuses while abiding by certain landscape requirements dictated by state, municipal and local authorities.
  • Turf Terminators’ in-house laborers, relationships with local nurseries and suppliers, and access to wholesale prices allow it to provide landscaping services at a low cost.
  • Government water rebates cover the cost of Turf Terminators’ services, which it provides without having to charge customers anything.

As reported by the International Business Times, some property owners have been less than thrilled with the end result. For instance, one homeowner signed over nearly $8,000 in rebates, but is now disappointed with how boring her lawn looks. That’s not a dig at Turf Terminators, it’s just that lots and lots of brown mulch, rock and drought-friendly plantings can lack some pizzazz. Turf Terminators has assembled a catalog of materials from which consumers can choose from when designing their new California-friendly landscape.

Turf Terminators has received some decent online reviews. The company’s Yelp and Yahoo ratings are 3.5 out of 5, and Facebook is 3.9. Turf Terminators has a B- rating from the BBB and received one complaint on April 21, it’s only complaint in the past three years.
