When Landon Barber was 14, he started a business mowing lawns for neighbors and others in his community.

“I was like, ‘Wow, I can start making decent money for a high-schooler instead of working at Food Lion and getting minimum wage bagging groceries.’ I realized I was able to make money on my time and just whenever I wanted to,” Barber said.

Now a rising senior at Brookville High School of Lynchburg, Virginia, Barber is expanding his skill set through the Southern Landscape Group’s landscape short course.

Southern Landscape Group, a company that provides planning, construction and aftercare services for landscaping, partnered with Campbell County Public Schools to provide four students a four-day, free, voluntary landscape short course that teaches them different aspects of the landscaping industry, including pouring foundation and footings for Trex decking—a wood-alternative decking—planting and installing a dry-laid stone walkway, installing a circle paver kit and installing stone veneer on a company sign.
