1. Go with a contractor you trust. Prices can vary widely and are usually based on the amount of work involved in clearing your property. Heads Up charges based on the time we are out at the site plus the cost of any material needed.
2. Ask the contractor about additional charges and price options. After the snow reaches a certain depth, some snow removal contractors charge by the inch, so find out how the company calculates charges.
3. Make sure that you are aware of which services you are getting. Are the walks and steps included? What about the cost of sand and/or salt? Will the company clear only after the storm, or during the snowfall as well?
4. Understand what triggers snow/ice removal. Is it up to you to contact the contractor? Or will they come based on inches accumulating? Who decides? Are weekends included?
5. Ask for references, and check them out.
6. Do not agree to the terms of the contract over the telephone. The contractor should provide you with a written agreement.
7. Be realistic with your expectations. Remember that a snowstorm makes traveling difficult for the contractor, too. During major snowstorms, it may take longer for the contractor to arrive.
