Protect Vegetation from Winter Desiccation

When vegetation loses a certain amount of water by frosty winter winds, typically they undergo winter burn which is when winds exceed the amount of water the plant can draw up through the frozen soil. As a result of this, lawns take longer to turn green, there may be dead patches, perennial plants that take longer to grow in the spring, browning/yellowing leaves and needles in evergreens and broad leaf trees. 

Winter desiccation can be avoided by maintaining proper vegetation precipitation during the late fall and early winter months and providing adequate water and nutrients to vegetation for as long as the ground is not frozen. Experts suggest one inch per week of water or saturation to a depth of 12-18 inches.
