Hands-On With STIHL's ALLPRO Tabless Battery System

Think about how many battery-powered outdoor power equipment tools you have in the truck. Think about the number of batteries charging. At one time, the swap-and-recharge cycle would endlessly repeat. Today, outdoor power equipment manufacturers have been taking steps to streamline this process — to push that cycle to decrease work interruptions, minimize the number of batteries needed, and/or make the power last the day.

In July 2026, STIHL invited a group of trade publication and social media personalities throughout the industry to Saratoga Springs, New York, to check out their next effort in battery technology for the pros. The STIHL new ALLPRO tabless battery system was designed to minimize battery swaps and improve productivity on the job.

Everything was Orange

The sky was orange. Hundreds of miles away, the smoke from a forest fire in Canada changed the color of the sky to an overcast hue. Still, the interest to find out what was ahead lay before. Luckily, we found ourselves in a pocket of decent temperatures — it was good to get outside.

During development, STIHL teams went out to their customers and asked about pain points. The message was astoundingly loud and clear with three must-have improvements: power, runtime, and quicker charging.

A fourth was the need for backward compatibility — that the tools announced 5 or 10 years ago would work with the new battery system. We are told that the ALLPRO system was designed to respect that investment, further adding to the number of tools the battery pack can power.

STIHL reports that the new system is able to reenergize a battery pack almost 50 percent faster than previous battery platforms from the company’s line. For example, using rapid charging, their AP 500.0 S was able to come to 80 percent in 21 minutes – they report that the new AP 300.0 P (C) can reach the same level in 10 minutes (or delivering 33 watt-hours of runtime) and reaching full charge in 20 minutes using the AL 1602 MO Rapid Charger (the former battery would need 41 minutes). They also report that the ALLPRO 300 P(C) tabless battery boasts a 150 percent increase in charging cycles compared to the standard series, up to 3,000 charge cycles.

That means, Kropfelder explains, that one charge cycle per day would bring 12 to 15 years of life while two charges per day would bring about 5 to 7 years of service life.

“It's not just the tablet cells that help get us there; it's the pack construction as well,” explains Ryan Kropfelder, senior manager of tree care and construction at STIHL Inc. “These performance series packs are IPX5 rated to withstand the elements, rain or shine. We make sure we test our packs to handle all those, all the environment, anything the environment can throw at it, and then robust construction.”

Jonathan Kozlowski - ForConstructionPros, IRONMARKETSThey then turned on a concrete drum mixer with several batteries being tossed around ruthlessly to simulate how they’ll survive the rough and tumbles of everyday life in the truck, trailer, or jobsite. This mixer was running as the group walked to the presentation, so the batteries had already had a good amount of time inside.

STIHL expanded their pack’s temperature range to allow them to work from -4° F to 122° F.  Brian Bowers, product manager of the energy management category at STIHL, took a battery out of a nearby chest freezer, read the battery temperature at 12 degrees and subsequently made a cut with a chainsaw through a log of ash wood without issue. This marks a reported 40 percent improvement over the STIHL AP battery platform and may allow STIHL into the snow and winter applications. 

Another demo included a large bucket to spray water on a battery. Same immediate work test. Same result.

The ALLPRO system includes a collection of charging products:

• The AL 1602 MO Ultra-Rapid Charger,
• The PS 2000 Power Station for mobile power on-the-go,
• The CM 6 ProPower Hub Mobile – a strip to connect up to six chargers, and
• The AL 301-4 Multi-Charger accessory to sequentially charge up to four batteries for overnight charging.

The PS2000 Power Station is capable of charging up to five AP300 batteries or up to 20 in daisy chain mode, depending on the type of battery. Past a generator or power bank, pros would also be able to use accessories like an MPPT to recharge with solar panels or the DC source of the truck.

According to experts within STIHL:

Tabless technology in the ALLPRO batteries will prevent tools from shutting down from packs that have reached maximum thermal load. Certain STIHL AP tools require specific peak power levels in order to achieve maximum performance. The Tabless Performance series allows these tools to reach optimal performance.

The Little Details

So often it’s the little details. As the weight and balance in the tools were impressive, but not being a professional myself, it’s difficult to truly comprehend — especially if my only comparison is based on my few “on sale” tools for home use. Pro-level batteries are an entirely different class. For me, a notable moment is the pop of the battery pack when removing it from the tool. A spring lifts (or jumps) the battery out. It’s a small moment but something I think might make a difference when wearing PPE or your grip strength has waned after hours of work.

One of our favorite off-the-cuff comments was that the only tool that can “beat” (by way of discharging) the charging station was the blower – a tool known for being high-demand on battery power.
